We are currently seeking a highly qualified Research Scientist – Flavor Chemistry/Product Development to join our Sensomics and Flavor Development department in Richmond, VA. The successful candidate will plan and coordinate analytical-sensory research strategy for the development and/or optimization of flavors for tobacco and non-tobacco products utilizing specialized scientific knowledge in flavor chemistry such as Sensomics. Specific accountabilities include: * Researching and identifying critical aroma, taste, mouthfeel compounds and new sensory technologies for the optimization of existing or the development of new tobacco or non-tobacco products. Applying sensory technologies/compounds to flavors, conducting and coordinating feasibility assessments (e.g. sensory evaluation, analytical testing) and making recommendations for their applicability and implementation to products. * Participating in bio-guided analysis, e.g., GCO/AEDA (Aroma Extract Dilution Analysis) and HPLC/TDA (Taste Dilution Analysis). * Independently supporting and coordinating cross-functional activities within Research, Development and Engineering (RD&E) and serving as technical liaison for research activities in RD&E to effectively utilize resources and expertise to generate required data in supporting product development activities. Leading technical investigations related to flavor related issues (e.g. flavor stability). * Leading, directing and providing technical guidance and instructions to junior lab personnel to conduct research and/or problem-solving investigations. Overseeing flavor compounding, tobacco and non-tobacco prototyping activities performed by junior lab personnel in cGMP environments. Participating in the maintenance and optimization of existing cGMP infrastructures. * Building organizational capability and fostering an environment of continuous improvement. Keeping abreast of new developments in Sensomics and flavor creation/development by participating in relevant scientific societies and their activities, and maintaining active contacts with external subject matter experts in the flavor-sensory field.
Qualifications include: * A Bachelor's Degree in Food Chemistry, Food Science, Chemistry or a related field is required. Master's Degree or PhD is preferred. Candidates with Bachelor's Degrees must have at least 5 years of experience in the field of flavor chemistry, food science or flavor creation/development. Candidates with advanced degrees must have at least 3 years of experience in these areas. * Knowledge or experience in the area of flavor analysis or flavor creation/development with know-how to utilize analytical-sensory driven data (e.g. GC/O, GC/MS, odor activity value concept) to support flavor creation/development. * Knowledge or experience in the isolation and analysis of organic flavor compounds (qualitative and quantitative) in complex mixtures as well as knowledge of flavor reaction pathways and flavor-precursor relationships preferred. * Experience in the design and execution of sensory evaluation methods to support flavor/product development activities preferred. * Knowledge or experience in a cGMP environment preferred.
