As a Food Scientist II you will have a high level of technical expertise and experience in applying scientific methods and principles to develop ingredient formulations and processes. The Food Scientist position at Chew includes but is not limited to the categories of:
Chocolate & Confection
Prepared / Frozen Foods
Baked Goods - Biscuits, Bars, Cookies & Crackers
Meal Solutions (meats and plant-based protein sources)
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Provide technical food science expertise in assigned projects and verticals, and mentor more junior technical team members
Monitor and research food science trends, manufacturing processes, and innovations on an ongoing basis to continue to bring new ideas to the team
Participate in all stages of product development, from ideation to manufacturing
Ensure that all SOPs relating to food safety, good manufacturing practice, and laboratory equipment operations are followed
Apply basic scientific and/or engineering principles to problems and issues with a disciplined, systematic approach
Be an integral partner in identifying and driving strategic initiatives within the technical and business functions
Create and execute detailed project plans with timelines, and manage all projects and deliverables to support wider business direction and deadlines
Take an independent and disciplined approach to organizing work activity, prioritizing tasks, and analysis; will also seek out additional projects and activities to drive the business forward
Deliver formulations as requested, from ordering ingredients to processing, and in required packaging
Meticulously and accurately record all tests and all pertinent analytical information
Ensure that nutrition guard rails and other criteria are maintained in the development process
Collaborate effectively with other team members (science, culinary, business operations) to resolve issues and deliver business objectives
Demonstrate a high level of creativity, initiative and professionalism, driving to results and cultivating a high-performing team culture
Lead and participate in product tastings and plant trials of new products
Perform tasks and other administrative activities as assigned
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO CHEW
For this role, we’re seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in a research and development laboratory setting within the food and beverage industry (ideally developing CPG products)

Ability to mentor junior team members and technicians on scientific process and research techniques
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in the use of computer systems and software (Apple/Mac preferred)
Ability to travel up to 10% of the time (both domestic and international)
