The Director of Research & Development will lead and direct the development of new and existing food ingredient products for IDF/ADF to meet company’s growth initiatives. IDF and ADF both currently process poultry ingredients for use in either people (IDF) or pet (ADF) foods. Innovation is a strategic focus for both company’s and this role will focus on driving this within the central R&D function. This will require: technology exploration, validation and effective project management skills, in-depth technical knowledge of food ingredient functionality, manufacturing processes, ingredient application laboratory skills, and the ability to work effectively with a multi-functional team and other professionals. The current technology platforms that IDF/ADF plan to develop and grow are protein and flavor. This candidate will need to demonstrate both technology and business acumen and to compile in-depth assessment and evaluation of new technologies (including return on investment), drive a robust technology project pipeline that aligns with customer, market and industry trends and value added growth initiatives. This position will support the business goals and strategic direction for new product development through ideation, research, development and innovation. The role will require people management skills and will have oversight for both internal and external R&D resources.
Driving innovation and new product development from internal and external resources to help fulfill IDF's strategic plan
Exploring alternative approaches to product and process development to deliver higher margin new product opportunities
Identifying solutions for improved product performance and address unmet customer and market needs.
People management and effective oversight across IDF/ADF internal R&D, external R&D resources and budget spending
Lead cross-functional teams in the technical aspects of product development through the investigation, planning, execution, evaluation and reporting on new product and new process development and key customer plant trials.
Able to initiate, thoroughly investigate, specify and enroll resources needed to implement new technology platforms and line extensions to drive the technology innovation for IDF's product offering in alignment with market trends and emerging opportunities.
Routine reports on exploratory technologies, new projects, pipeline and project alignment with strategic customer and/or market needs and can capture value for IDF/ADF
Ensure proper resourcing and project management to drive strategic customer projects and completion of the department's projects and goals.
Establish and maintain a process for prioritizing customer projects, ensuring sales communication, feedback and customer project completion, in keeping with industry standards (2 week turnaround)
Advise, direct and coach others work, including food technology on complex projects.
Champions continuous product and process improvement for greater product quality and profitability
Participates in sales, marketing and consumer insights activities to understand customer and market needs
Develop and/or implement technical assessments and applies analytical methods with practical application to enhance IDF's development and manufacturing processes.
Stays apprised of technologies used by other relevant food manufacturers by reviewing technical literature, attending seminars and maintaining acute knowledge of market competition.
Questions processes, procedures and policies. Fully investigates, develops and presents alternatives for implementation.
Maintains an accurate record of work activities in lab notebooks and shared drive: clarifies the objectives of test, accurate formulas, processing conditions, required equipment and equipment set-up.
Bachelor of Science (BS); e.g.: Chemistry, Food Science and Master’s Degree (MS, MBA) is preferred; Food Science, Food Processing and or Chemistry
15 years minimum experience in the areas of research, innovation and or application development for Food Ingredient or Processed Food Manufacturing Company
Ability to effectively analyze data and to effectively communicate that data and its implications through verbal, written and graphical means.
Demonstrated ability to effectively conduct formal meetings with professional clientele to define project objectives. Formulate action plans and report on progress toward objectives.
In addition to R&D, candidate should have good understanding of business processes – finance, supply chain, HR, IT, procurement, etc.
Outstanding communication, leadership, personal initiative and computer skills
