Winrock International and The Federation of Fruits Growers of Lower Guinea (Federation des Planteurs de la Filière Fruits de la Basse Guinee” (FEPAF-BG)) requests the support of a Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer for a 16 day volunteer assignment (including travel) located in Kindia. The volunteer will train the Federation representatives on effective and improved packaging to allow FEPAF-BG members to sell products in better and more attractive packaging, contributing to increased sales. Good packaging of agriculture products helps in increasing the demand on a continuous basis, and thereby guarantees a higher income to the producer. The training will equip members with the skills and knowledge to penetrate mainly the European Union (EU) market, and also the US and Maghreb markets.
Packaging is a vital component of export success. Products need to be preserved and protected in order to reach their destination in perfect condition. Packaging also needs to position, differentiate, and sell the product, using materials that comply with regulations. FEPAF-BG has had challenges exporting fresh and dry fruits (mango and pineapple) due to lack of good packaging and lack of knowledge about international regulations (in particular to the EU). Imported packaging is cheaper and higher quality than packaging produced in Guinea, and available for purchase locally.
The volunteer should have the following qualifications and background:
Master’s degree or higher in Marketing, Business Administration, Agribusiness, or another relevant topic
At least 5 years of experience in marketing strategy development with farmer-based organizations or farming enterprises
Experience in improving agricultural products branding, labeling, pricing, packaging, and promotion
Experience working in developing countries (particularly in West Africa) is desired
Experience training adults
Ability to develop or provide access to visual aids for an audience with a low literacy rate
French language skills preferred, but a translator will be provided if needed.
Knowledge of regulatory and health requirements on the import of agricultural products into the European Union preferred
***As part of the Farmer-to-Farmer Consortium, this assignment is made possible through USAID funding. In accordance to USAID guidelines, any candidates submitted for consideration under this project must have a valid US passport or Green Card.***
