Lack of the management skills such as process engineering and project management negatively affects the overall performance of food industries and accordingly the quality and safety of products provided to their customers. Knowing, understanding and implementing methodologies and approaches of developing processes for new products and process improvements from feasibility study to development and commercialization is very important to strengthen the food businesses capacity to satisfy their customers, increase their profits and sustain in the markets.
Fielding a process engineering and management volunteer expert to train the targeted food processing plants managers on process engineering, improvement and management will enable the targeted hosts to evaluate their current and new projects/products/processes, take actions and make decisions that are effective, efficient, and yield safer and higher quality products for their customers.
The requested volunteer will provide a training course to two different groups of trainees on process engineering, improvement and management in food industries. The assignment objective is to enhance the capacity of the targeted food processing plants managers in order to use methods and tools for improving product and process design which will lead to strengthen the competitiveness of their organizations.
During this assignment, the volunteer expert will meet with representatives from the host organizations to assess their training needs. Based on the volunteer’s meetings, he/she will develop tailored training materials and will introduce the two 3-day training courses to two different targeted food processing plant managers. He/she is also expected to recommend follow-up trainings if needed.
Objectives and Outcomes of the Assignment
Objective 1: To enhance the capacity of the targeted Egyptian food processing plant managers in order to improving product and process design.
Outcome 1: The targeted managers are able to improve product and process design in their facilities.
Objective 2: To strengthen the targeted organizations competitive position.
Outcome 2: Competitiveness of the targeted organizations is enhanced.
Each volunteer must submit a Final Report to the F2F Program, which includes the following sections:
A summary of tasks and observations from site visit(s)
A list of 3-5 specific and actionable recommendations for the host organization(s). The recommendations are very important to the program as we use them to track host adoption of recommendations and the impact on hosts’ farms and businesses. These recommendations will be reviewed during the debriefing session with country staff at the end of the assignment and the volunteer may make revisions to them in their Final Report
A section listing the assignment objectives and how they were met or why they were not met
A short summary of the assignment with relevant photos that can be posted to social media
Upon return to the United States, the volunteer is requested to communicate his or her F2F experience. Outlets to share the volunteer experience include home groups (e.g., civic and religious groups, professional associations, etc.), workplace presentations, local newspapers, community or workplace newsletters, personal blogs and social media sites. It is important to give recognition to USAID for funding F2F. At least two outreach events are requested and should be communicated to Aimee Foster at firstname.lastname@example.org or Sadie Paschke at email@example.com. Volunteers will be invited to join a volunteer group through LinkedIn and will receive occasional surveys requesting information about completed outreach activities during each period.
The recruited volunteer is expected to have the following skills and qualifications:
Educational Background: processing engineering and management, or equivalent
Practical knowledge and experience in implementing processing design and engineering in food industries.
Training Skills, including training in group settings.
Good writing and computer skills
Sufficiently physically fit, with appropriate medical clearance.
Familiar with conducting trainings through translators/interpreters
Requirement of the Program: Only U.S. citizens or Green Card holders are eligible to apply.
