The Product Development Scientist must be skilled in the practical and technical aspects of the fields of food chemistry, sensory sciences and biological science, specifically product and process development. Must have demonstrated skills in developing and/or reformulating food products from ideation through commercialization. This position also requires the ability to integrate technical and culinary skills with creativity in new product development and process design and requires the ability to manage multiple project tasks simultaneously. Project activities are related to product development, innovation, ingredient selection, consumer testing, nutrition assessment, management of projects in the test kitchen, pilot plant and plant tests, brand maintenance and evaluation of new technologies; all requiring a high level of attention to detail. This position collaborates with the product development team, sales, marketing, finance and operations and supports projects including external resources as assigned by the RDI Director. It is essential that the person in this position have the ability to adhere to the company mission and objectives in developing products differentiated by nutrition, gluten free, organic and other consumer-valued attributes.
The R&D Process at Mary’s Gone Crackers is driven by technological advancement, research, continuous improvement, quality improvement, cost savings, applications, and sales support.
Assist in new product development that meets all Mary’s Gone Crackers certifications and guidelines of Organic, Gluten Free, Vegan, Kosher, Nut Free, and non-GMO, using nutrient dense ingredients.
Perform various science experiments involving new and existing product ingredients, packaging or recipe components.
Assist the technical support liaison for product development project requests by communicating with representatives regarding development progress and feedback, communicating with other departments as necessary regarding the project, and assisting with providing information necessary for customers.
Perform research and ideation related to new technologies which could offer competitive advantage.
Design robust statistical industrial experiments with defined outcomes and success criteria.
Ensure products achieve desired nutritional, sensory, cost and shelf life success criteria parameters.
Present ideas and recommendation to senior management in various departments.
Flag issues and concerns with potential solutions in a timely manner.
Assist with project activities by clarifying completion data target, identifying the acceptable prototype target, developing timelines, identifying functions needed to be performed, designing and formulating the benchmark prototype, identifying specifications, obtaining approval and scaling up product in plant operation from bench prototype.
Identify, champion and adapt new technologies, tools and processes
Keep a running log of notes, samples and emails involving products being worked on and projects for future Research & Development.
Aid in product performance testing within the Mary’s Gone Crackers facility by assisting in setting target quality along with the Director of Research, Development & Innovation, VP Operations and the Quality Assurance Sr. Manger to ensure quality product.
Assist with the development of product specifications; provide recommendations for ingredient specifications.
Assist with the testing of new supplier ingredients for viability within a recipe.
Assist with the improvement of current products or product lines.
Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Perform other duties as assigned.
