Impossible Foods is looking for an experienced, motivated and mission-aligned Principal Scientist to join the Product Innovation Department. The overarching goal of the group is to design, research & develop uncompromisingly delicious plant-based products to drive a consumer movement to eliminate animal agriculture. We are looking for a person who is consumer focused, a highly developed experimentalist, an analytical thinker, and a creative problem solver. The primary responsibility for this role is lead a group of scientists and research associates to design innovative plant-based products and create early stage concept products. We are looking for someone with a proven track record in consumer research, product design and innovation. As a team leader, s/he will be supervising several scientists, engineers, and research associates. S/he will be guiding the teams' research, helping with experiment design and engineering solutions, and mentoring their scientific development. Outside of the group, s/he will be expected to establish strong cross-functional interactions. They will also be expected to set-up external contracts. We are looking for a leader that is consumer focused who can inspire, generate ideas, manage a team and drive the creation of consumer focused products.
Lead a group of scientists, engineers, research associates working in the area of product design and the creation of concepts prototypes
Bring consumer-focused thinking to design, innovation, and the development of new food products.
Design food products aligning customer, consumer, and company needs
Conduct research to understand our consumer’s needs, drivers of liking, product attributes, IHUT and white space studies
Drive the creation of novel concept prototypes leveraging new and existing food texturization process, food processing methods, flavor technology and novel ingredients
Determine product features, key product attributes and define gold standard products
Lead cross-functional collaboration particularly with consumer insights, sensory science and product management
Work with the new product teams to develop and validate the best products
Participate in internal sensory panels
Ph.D. in Food Science, Sensory Science, Biochemistry, Material Science, Engineering, Product Design or similar field
15+ years of experience in consumer research, product design and/or product innovation
Proven track record for designing innovate new products
Extensive experience translating human values and consumer research into product design
10+ years of Sensory/perceptual research experience
5+ years of experience managing a team
An experimentalist with extensive use of the scientific method
Ability to thrive in a diverse, dynamic team
Experience designing, and conducting ethnography-based research
Self-starter that is naturally curious and enjoys working in a fast-past environment
Ability to continuously challenge assumptions to seek innovative solutions
