Food Chemistry, Food Engineering, Research & Development
Do you want to be part of an exciting company dedicated to solving the greatest challenge humanity faces? Then Impossible Foods is the place for you.
Impossible Foods was founded in 2011 to create a truly sustainable global food system by inventing an efficient, sustainable way to transform plants into irresistibly delicious, nutritious food -- food that delivers all the pleasures and nutritional benefits consumers demand, without the destructive environmental impact. Our first product, the Impossible Burger, was introduced by top chefs to the world and is currently available at over 16,000 restaurants across the United States and abroad.
Impossible Foods is looking for a motivated, mission-aligned person to join the Materials & Texture team. The overarching goal of the group is to create an arsenal of plant-based materials that enable the re-creation of any animal-based food products. We are looking for people who can contribute highly developed experimentalist skills, analytical thinking, and creative ideation to help us make daily progress towards that goal.
As a Research Associate, she/he will be expected to spend most of their time as an experimentalist, performing hands-on experiments at the lab bench, or at the pilot plant. Good organization and data recording skills are as essential for this position, as curiosity and self-starting. She/he will be working closely with a scientist on the team who would serve as her/his scientific and career mentor. The scientist will take the lead in defining research directions and designing experiments, and rely on the prospective Research Associate for execution and data analysis. At the same time, Research Associate is expected to take an active part in discussing ideas and experimental design, and to grow towards taking a bigger role in both. We take professional development of researchers in the group seriously and aim for them to develop into fully independent scientists.
Use material science and engineering approaches to develop plant-based materials that mimic specific properties of animal tissue, and use them to create food prototypes.
Conduct fiber spinning research, including the execution of biopolymer mixing and spinning experiments.
Characterize materials using a wide array of techniques including mechanical testing, thermal analysis, texture analysis, rheology, microscopy, and spectroscopy.
Research approaches that can improve food prototypes with respect to target values of juiciness, tenderness, density, and other mechanical and sensory properties.
Write detailed experimental records and maintain an electronic lab notebook.
Support pilot trials following GMP.
Travel occasionally to conduct trials at external sites.
BS or MSc. in Material Science/Engineering, Fiber Science/Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, Textile, Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering or related fields.
1 to 3 years of experimental research experience with biomaterials or food.
Experience with materials testing, texture analysis, and kitchen work.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Solid understanding of statistical methods.
CAD and electrical engineering skills are a plus.
