The role of the Research and Development Manager at Franklin Foods is to be responsible for developing new products, improving existing products and embracing new technologies to improve the Franklin Foods portfolio of products and offerings. Franklin Foods is growing and needs new products that are functional and serve as a niche for our customers of today and tomorrow.
1. Reporting Structure
The position of Research and Development Manager reports directly to the Vice President of Operations
Direct Reports to the Research and Development Manager – Research and Development Personnel.
The Research and Development Manager works closely with Sales, Marketing and Production.
2. Main tasks:
o Responsible for the development of cutting-edge cream cheese and plant-based products. These products must taste very good and also have functional properties that the customer finds value added.
o This position is responsible for taking a potential new product from the mixing bowl to the production line and every step in between.
o Responsible for the creation of products that are profitable taking into consideration factors under your control. For example, you cannot control the sale price of the product, but you can control the cost of the product based on the ingredients used etc.
o Work closely with Sales and Marketing to create new products that the market wants and demands. However, this position must also work with Production to figure out if the product can be made correctly and efficiently within the plant limitations. Identify investments that could be made to accomplish the goal.
o Work closely with Q.A. to make sure the product is safe to make from a microbial and safe food handling standpoint for example - Allergens need special care in handling and cleaning.
o Build and develop a functional and highly effective R+D Team
o Work with Customers to solve functional issues with the products that they buy from us. This may mean working with a baker to improve cracking on their cheesecakes or it could be developing a special flavor for a retail customer.
o Must be able work well in a Team setting or be able to head up a project whatever the situation dictates.
- Organized and self-motivated
- A good dairy background with a focus on cheese technology
- Several years if experience developing new products.
- Strong working knowledge of the standard of identity of dairy Products and how this pertains to the CFR (Code of Feral Regulations)
- Problem Solving and critical thinking
- Must be very hands on. Take an active role in the physical development of new products as well as the formulations
- Leadership and teaching skills.
- Good with People.
- Good Communication and interpersonal skills
- Good technical knowledge of our products
