Management of Fall Armyworm (M-FAW) in Maize for Smallholder Farmers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) - PREPARATION OF TRAINING MATERIALS IN FRENCH FOR SMALLHOLDER FARMERS
Land O’Lakes Venture37 is implementing a five-year project to increase the capacity of smallholder farmers to manage Fall Armyworm (FAW) in maize, a staple crop for many rural households. The project has three main components as follows:
Component 1: Safe and cost-effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies are developed, validated, and scaled for the local context.
Component 2: Farmers and other local agricultural system actors adopt Good Agricultural Practices – Integrated Pest Management (GAP-IPM) practices to combat FAW and reduce the use of toxic pesticides.
Component 3: Policies, learning, and systems are in place to create an enabling environment for access to and safe use of GAP-IPM technologies
To promote adoption of GAP IPM practices that combat FAW and reduce toxic pesticide use, the project will use training materials being developed for another project (Alliance for a Green Revolution (AGRA) funded Developing Distance Learning Modules (DDLM) project). These FAW training modules have been designed by expert entomologists with Villa Crop Protection, a South African agricultural inputs provider. The modules are intended for Agricultural Extension Agents and will be used to assist those agents in disseminating FAW IPM practices.
To facilitate usage of these training materials in the DRC, they will be translated into languages that fit the context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including French and Swahili (as used in parts of the DRC). As an Associate award of a Farmer-to-Farmer project, a USAID-funded volunteer program, the project seeks a volunteer experienced in French to assist in the preparation of French-language versions of these materials.
SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this volunteer assignment is to help prepare the materials to be used in the DRC in French by providing a review of technical training materials related to FAW that have been pre-translated from English to French using an online translation service. The review will assure that the translation is accurate for the material, appropriate for use in the DRC in terms of the quality of translation, appropriateness of vocabulary, and presentation of materials.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The objective of this volunteer assignment is to review, correct technical language and general grammar. There will be approximately 34 Word documents and 17 PowerPoint presentations to review. The formatting of the documents and PowerPoints should remain unchanged.
Working in collaboration with a contact and resource person on the DRC project team, the volunteer will need to accomplish the following tasks:
Participate in an orientation call with the project team to further understand the project and intended role of the training materials in the project
Review the Word documents and PowerPoint presentations provided by the project and correct language/grammar errors.
Ensure formatting does not change.
Advanced degree in French or equivalent experience
Experience in agriculture, specifically with Fall Armyworm, in English and French
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Fluency in English required
