The John Ogonowski and Doug Bereuter Farmer-to-Farmer Program provides technical assistance from U.S. volunteers to farmers, farm groups, agribusinesses, and other agriculture sector institutions in developing and transitional countries with the goal of promoting sustainable improvements in food security and agricultural processing, production, and marketing. The program leverages the expertise of volunteers from U.S. farms, universities, cooperatives, private agribusinesses, and nonprofit farm organizations to respond to the local needs of host-country farmers and organizations.
Summary of Assignment
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ACDI/VOCA will be engaging a local volunteer, who will personally meet and engage with the host, and a US-based volunteer, who will provide mentorship, guidance, and recommendations to the local volunteer and host virtually, as required by USAID.
The hosts request a volunteer to work with their team and provide training on the standard technical production practices for different cheese varieties, with a focus on Camembert and Brie (other potential cheeses include Burrata, Mozzarella, and Stracciatella). The host also requests guidance and recommendations on milk handling and any sanitation/hygienic issues related to dairy products.
Due to travel restrictions, the assignment will take place remotely.
Qualifications: Degree in Dairy Science, Dairy Management, or another related field. At least 5 years of experience with cheese-making; experience with Brie and Camembert is preferred. Additional experience with product storage, packaging, safety, and quality standards preferred as well. Familiarity with social platforms such as MS Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp, etc.
