Background
The USAID funded Farmer-to-Farmer Food Safety and Quality (F2F FSQ) program provides technical assistance to host organizations in Bangladesh, Lebanon and Egypt who work in agricultural production and/or agro-processing. Assistance is provided by mobilizing volunteer food safety and quality experts through remote and in-person assignments. F2F FSQ leverages the Global Markets Program (GMaP), owned by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) to provide a framework of competencies and toolkits to help hosts conduct self-assessments and identify areas of needed support which then drives volunteer assignment development.
Scope of Assignment
The host organization is aiming to upgrade their labels to be compliant with the recent regulations so they can enter new local and international markets. However, given the somewhat scattered nature of the data, and the lack of the host’s experience in such requirements, organizations still require assistance on the nutrition facts and labeling requirements.
With the aim of allowing the host to access new markets and increase the customers’ confidence in its products, there is a need to improve the current labels of the products to include all the information that are mandatory by the regulatory and statutory requirements.
The Farmer-to-Farmer FSQ project is assisting the host organization in improving their product labels following the international norms. To complete the new label, nutrition facts panel and ingredients information should be added to the label to be complaint with the international standards which will ease the process of entering new markets. Currently, the host has limited knowledge and resources on the required information and the correct display on the label and they are requesting the assistance from a US volunteer expert that can identify the needed information and undergo theoretical calculations to finalize nutrition facts panel for selected products.
The volunteer will work with the host organization remotely to achieve the following objectives and outcomes:
Objectives:
- Formulate and complete the nutrition facts for the host’s main products
- Guide on the international (FDA) labeling requirements
Outcomes:
- Host organization updated their products’ nutrition facts information
- Host organization updated their products’ labels as per the international market requirements
