Connor & Gallagher OneSource, on behalf of St. Charles Trading, Inc., St. Charles Trading, Inc., is seeking a full-time Assistant Food Scientist for our Elgin, IL location working Monday-Friday, generally 8 am – 5 pm. This is an in-office role. The ideal candidate will provide technical expertise and assist with the development and review of formulations for current and future products. To be successful in this role, the candidate will be able to work in a team and learn new processes as well as interpret and apply scientific findings to food, know how to translate findings into innovative products, and understand how to translate business objectives into clear project goals.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Assist in designing blend solutions tailored to the customers’ needs.
Create and test formulas.
Manage ingredient inventory.
Operate, collect, and analyze results in laboratory using existing lab equipment.
Work with vendors to research new ingredients and product applications.
Provide new solution options for scalability and transfer benchtop development to pilot and / or full-scale production.
Create samples in conjunction with appropriate documentation such as nutritional declarations, ingredient declarations and specifications.
Assist in creating and maintaining standard operating procedures.
Provide technical thought leadership and present recommendations to organizations leadership.
Be flexible in taking additional tasks as needed to support the Company’s business goals.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Proficient in math conversion, familiar with the metric system, weights and measurements with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information
Strong, positive verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
Willing to take direction and work collaboratively within R&D
Collaborate cross-functionally with Quality Assurance, Production, Assist In-House Sensory teams.
Analytical, highly organized, detail-oriented, methodical, efficient, and able to leverage research and data to help guide decisions.
Detail oriented, self-motivated, self-starter that can work with minimal guidance.
Strong focus on food safety and quality.
Ability to try a variety of foods including all major allergens.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree Required in food science, biology, nutrition, or similar discipline.
1-3 years’ experience as a food scientist and/or research and development in the food industry. Internship experience will be evaluated.
1-3 years’ project management experience.
Background or strong understanding of basic food safety.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
Systems experience with Sage (ERP), Genesis, Airtable
Strong formulation and industrial processing knowledge a plus.
